Dozois Does It Again
Aug. 2nd, 2007 02:12 pmYou know you're getting old when an annual publication starts to feel like a regular event. Gardner Dozois has been editing his annual Year's Best Science Fiction (do a search on "dozois" to actually locate the volume) for nearly a quarter of a century and this year's 600+page edition is definitely a good one. There isn't a bad story in the book and almost all of them qualify as "best" in my mind.
During most of his run as the editor of this year's best collect, Dozois also edited Asimov's Science Fiction, a magazine I respect for the literary qualities of its prose but which I usually found too bleak and/or fantastical in tone for my tastes. However, his anthology has consistently provided first-rate literary science fiction and this year is no different.
If you are one of those rare SF readers who actually reads the mainstream American SF magazines, the book will still be worth your while, as only 9 of the 28 stories come from those sources.
If you are a science fiction fan, you need this book on your shelf; if you are merely curious about the current state of the field, it is is a marvelous place to start.
