It's the exuberant, goofy joy of it that I love. And the wig. And the resigned exchange of glances between Bob and Santa at the end. And the accordions. And ... well, just the fun of it, you know?
It reminds me a little of "God Gave Names to All the Animals" from Slow Train Coming, though in this case Dylan can neither be credited nor faulted for writing it.
The song itself has apparently been around for a while, but Dylan's version is pretty new. Personally, I'm betting it's going to become a perennial favourite. (And actually so might the entire album, though I realize not everyone is going to be enamoured of that broken voice "crooning" Christmas carols. Time has not been as kind to Dylan's voice as it has been to, say, Leonard Cohen's — though I must quickly add I think Dylan still uses what he has brilliantly.
what the hell
