I am a natural-born archivist (or "pack-rat", if you prefer), and like to be able to cross-reference things on file.

Such as livejournal replies.

To make a long story short, I hate empty subject-lines, Gentle Readers. Those of you who have been using it when replying to entries here already have my Gratitude; those of you who will read this and start to use it will have it. Those of you who refuse to do so, will cause me to mutter briefly, then carry on with Life.

In other words, this is a Request, not a Rule. Carry on.

You are super lame.

But I will try to oblige the request.

Hmm ... should things continue in this tone, my crystal ball foresees an Official Friends-Cut in the Offing, with a post offering space for suitable Penitential Regrets in exchange for Probationary Re-Instatement.

Young Geoffrey has Spoken.

Okay, hope my tongue in cheekedness was clear. Happy to oblige on the subject line if I remember.

It was, it was! As was mine. (I should have remembered we only friended one another within the past week or two.)

I thank you for the effort (if not for your good manners). Heavens! What happened to the well-bread young lady I met on [livejournal.com profile] canpolitik? What next? Will the heavens open and a plague of locusts descend upon us all?

She was boring

Also, really Geoffrey, bread? ;P

I've been hanging my head in shame a full 15 minutes of bone-head English penitence.

Also, though you may feel free to do so, there is no requirement encouragement to change the subject-line with each reply; in this case, I suggest that my spelling error suggests that "You are super lame" continues to be an appropriate topic-title.

on the subject...

I'm just curious, how does the subject heading help to cross reference things when they can all be spontaneous and different?

It doesn't help within Livejournal, but without — when searching through gmail, for instance. Nor will it help if people change the subject-line with each reply. Also, it will help if ever I leave LJ or if LJ bites the dust.

To tell you the truth, if I miss the old days of usenet; if I were running LJ, the subject line of a reply would, by default, say, "Re: [whatever the original post's subject was]."

Still, if it wasn't clear initially, blank subject-lines aren't that important to me, but more of a pet-peeve.

but this makes sense - and it's fun to play with the blank text field!

Oh, how I envy you. To never have known the name "Julia Allison"... bliss.
From: [identity profile] ed-rex.livejournal.com
And now you've popped my Allison cherry.

Is there some kind of law stating that right-wing commentators must be either ugly old white guys or hot, skinny white chicks?

mutter briefly

and carry on with life!

Carrying on, and wondering whether I ought to start a list of pet-peeves; I also have problems with animated icons.

Yes, I'm an old grump.

Does it have to make sense?

Will any subject line do, or does it have to make sense and/or pertain to the topic at hand?

I'd prefer that it made sense, but it's not important. Something I didn't say in my reply to [livejournal.com profile] jade_noir is that it also makes for a more compact Gmail inbox.
