I mean really! Does anyone in this world actually do anything but hang up (possibly while cursing foully) when they answer the telephone only to hear a robot on the other end? If so, for god's sakes, why?!?

cheeky answer

Well, occasionally I'll listen to its pitch to make sure it's not a person I can actually let down carefully. The reason for this is that I have twice worked in the mass-random-phoning sector, once for market research, once for telemarketing. So, you know, I'm always sympathetic to the person on the other end of the phone who gets mistaken for a robot since I've been there! ;P

...You seem to get a lot of unsolicited phone calls.

I don't think I've ever mistaken a person for a robot (though I can't, of course, be entirely certain). I too have worked in the random-phoning sector, mostly for Environics - I tried selling Toronto Star subs when I was a kid, but last about 2 and a half days. I am not a born salesman.

Oh. I've posted about them before, have I? Livejournal needs a better indexing function.

Since you (implicitly) asked, I do. There are a number of organizations who are out to get me - but I'm dealing with the problem(s).

P.S. I liked that you used the subject-line. My Inner Archivist appreciates it quite a lot.

I'm not a born salesman either -- it took me a month to even get someone to bite at the telemarketing job. But luckily for me I'd been hired at the very beginning of the campaign and didn't get sacked for lack of results as most people who failed to make a sale within two weeks were. I was on the point of being let go when it worked out. I sometimes almost wished it hadn't, though, because even though I needed the money and my co-workers were great and the job had interesting perks, it was really, really soul-crushing.

I feel like yes, you have posted about them before? I don't know why I would imagine that and be right. But then again, it does usually take more than one annoying trivial incident to spark (even a pithy) rant, so maybe I was unconsciously extrapolating or something. I dunno.

As for organizations out to get you, ahhh, my sympathies. I have never been so hunted, but have shared a household with a person who has been and keeps getting into the same situation, so I definitely understand your annoyance better.

Aaaaand I thought it was only fair to use the subject-line since you had specifically titled this a rhetorical question ;)

Last things first: I hate that I missed your joke vis-a-vis the subject line, but I'm glad you explained it to me, since it's actually funny.

I think today and yesterday were somehow ordained as repeats. I just realized that the conversation I'm having in another thread is one I had (with the same person no less!) maybe a year or so ago.

So it's a good bet you've seen me post about the robots before as well.

I really need to get a life.

Post-scriptum: I read your post about Dion with some interest and have it open in hopes that I'll actually reply to it. No promises (my fingers are honest-to-god getting tired), but in saying so, I'm hoping to put a little pressure on myself before the man has already been Prime Minister for a year-and-a-half.

What! Why have I never had the privilege of a robot phoning me?
