Have you tried google's DOCUMENTS application. It was a nice little app called WRITERLY and was owned independently until Google got their hands on it. I still use it, but it allows you access your work from anywhere and is pretty good at autosaving it.
If you have a gmail account you can log into DOCUMENTS directly.
I have used them on a couple of changes, but I admit I find the interface too clunky - or did, eight or ten months ago. God knows, it might be better now.
For the record, though, the fault was about 90% mine. But who would have thought OpenOffice would clear your clipboard when you closed it without saving?
