I tried to deal with the European nay-sayers (it's complicated as an example because they proceded to slaughter 10s of millions of Native North Americans).
You're quite right that it will (if it happens) cost lives, probably quite a few. It won't happen if people don't understand that exploring an entirely new environment is inherently dangerous - as when they shut down the space shuttle program for years when they have an accident. (Let's leave aside the fact the shuttle is a lousy spaceship and an even worse airplane.)
