Maybe there is such a thing as wind-chill after all

To say I now understand how Scott and company felt while on the return leg of their Antarctic holiday would be both crass (as crass as calling that fatal voyage a holiday) and untrue.

But, mercy! Cycling 12 or so kilometres in the face of a north wind that made -9C feel like -17 feels damned cold at 0400 hours.

And yet, strangely enough, I feel good. And I am super glad to see snow replace all the god damned rain we've been having.

All the office towers near my place create these perfect wind-tunnels on the east-west street.

Any day with wind in winter, as I walk home into it I wish (no matter how appropriately dressed for the weather I am) that I had:
- goggles (that I could completely cover my face with a scarve rather than needing to leave eye-slits)
- a breathing tube (see above)
- a cheering squad who would encourage me everytime I manage to take another step into a wind that keeps trying to push me back

Now of course this same wind helps me going to work where it is pushing into my Canadian winter headgear (parka, hood very well wrapped scarf/hat) and also tries to send me hurrying down the street almost faster than I can balance walking.

I can deal with low temperatures. I can't deal with wind. AUGH, THE WIND! Kudos to you for making it through that wind. At that hour! Good lord.

also I want to know why we haven't any snow - it is one of the few concessions for the cold! Where is my snow?

This winter, I need to get Raven to take some photos of me in my cycling attire. I haven't owned a parka for years.

Wind is hard

Since I don't know where you are, I can't comment on the specifics of the lack of snow — but I wouldn't be surprised if there is a connection to anthropogenic global warming (ahem. Sometimes Big Words R Us). If you're in Toronto, typically that doesn't see much in the way of snow until January, and then you're as likely to see rain as snow.
