I am very pleased to find myself a catalyst for someone else discovering TLOTR. As you know, it's a book I've managed to read over and over, like one returning to a favourite neighbourhood or foreign country, always finding something new in the familiar strangeness.
Although I reacted somewhat like you did when the first film came out, I realized after seeing the third that the films — no matter how gorgeous to look at they were — still failed to tell the whole story. (Indeed, they did leave out Bombadil and what's up with turning Gimli into comic relief?)
Speaking of Bombadil and Goldberry, I'm intrigued by your reaction. Truth is, those chapters are probably the only ones I've ever actually skipped during some of my re-reads. Though I find as I get older they speak to me more than they did when I was younger.
