Lord of the Rings

I hope you'll be happy to know that I've finally picked up all three volumes. I'm almost finished with Book I, I think; I'm about 200 pages in. They're my grandmother's favorite books. By the time I felt old enough to read them, someone was arrogant enough to think they could recreate the epic majesty of the literature through film, and it was all the hype.

More than anything, it's like a breath of fresh air. This is the first book I've read in about two years that I didn't burn through just to get to the end. I had a habit as a youngster of reading books just to say I'd read them. That isn't to say I didn't enjoy these books, but I didn't give myself enough of a chance to enjoy them completely because my intentions were impure. I've tried to break myself of this habit and I thought I'd succeeded until I picked up Lord of the Rings. Quite opposite to my nature, I find myself slowing myself down as I read it, as though it were the last sip of water in an entire desert. I'm afraid it's going to run out. Simultaneously, I'm so happy I've found such a wonderful thing to read because I know it will only get better with age and more studying.

I must have been quite the cynic to assume I wouldn't enjoy this as much as I am. And, you know, I probably wouldn't have even tried to if you hadn't raved about it so much to me, so thank you.

I hope all is well with you! Are you enjoying your new job?
