Emmerson is remarkably appalling - and apparently entirely unaware (though it seems hard to believe) of just why so many people find him so.

From an analytical standpoint, I can only guess that Harper is doing the ugly things fast and early, so that people will, he hopes, have forgotten about them by the time the next election is called. But talk about betraying your avowed principles - and fast!
